This is a super clean and bright lot from the ever brilliant Carlos and we are so happy to have his coffee for a third year. We taste kiwi, grapefruit and panela sugar.

This has been a tough harvest for many in Costa Rica. The pandemic has affected the availability of labour which has caused huge logistical challenges as well as reducing quality yields and driving prices up. Despite the challenges, Carlos has managed to produce a few cracking coffees this year and we are really proud to present a washed lot of his for the first time. 

Carlos and his family live in El Llano de La Piedra in Tarrazu. Just across the river is the micromill, Don Eli, which the family built between 2014 and 2015 in order to be able to process the coffees from their farms themselves rather than selling cherries to their local cooperative. Having control over the processing meant that they could focus on innovative methods, and ensure quality in every lot. They transitioned into a mindset of quality over quantity, and today specialize in Honey and Natural processed coffees in addition to clean, fully washed lots. This lot of the Typica variety is dry fermented before being fully washed.

The Tarrazú region lies in the high mountains of the southern Pacific region south of Costa Rica’s capital city of San Jose and is one of the most densely planted high altitude regions in Central America, with many farms at or above 2000 meters above sea level. The region benefits from two well-defined seasons which encourages even blossoming and the fertile, volcanic soils and rolling mountainsides are well-suited to agriculture.
